Did you know that there is a difference between toxic black mold and mildew? While both are a type of fungus (mold), mildew is not generally toxic, but it can cause allergy problems in some people. Toxic mold however, can be quite serious and when left undisturbed it can cause a wide arrange of health problems.

Yet despite their differences, both types of mold and mildew should never be left undisturbed for obvious health reasons and I honestly don’t know anyone who loves looking at a nasty fungus problem. However, before you run out and buy a mold and mildew remover, you should keep in mind that:

Black Mold is a toxin that requires special attention. A simple cleaner will not kill this type of fungus. You need to purchase a product that is designed for toxic mold.

While mildew is generally not dangerous, it’s a good idea that you wear protection when cleaning any fungus. You’ll need a pair of rubber gloves, goggles and a paper (surgical) mask for the job.

Both types of fungus rely on moisture. To minimize growth, repair and seal any leaks before you try to clean up the mold. Otherwise the mold will be back within a few weeks.

Keep things dry to prevent future fungal growth. Wipe down walls after bathing or showering, run exhaust vans and open windows when possible.

Don’t try to do it yourself when toxic molds are more than 10 square feet. Instead, hire a professional black mold removal company to get the job done safely. If you’re worried about your budget, talk to your insurance company to see if the costs are covered. If not, find out if your city or county offers help for homes that have been invaded by mold.

If you can, invest in an exhaust fan for the laundry room, bathroom and kitchen. If you can’t afford to do so, consider investing in a few dehumidifiers to help reduce the moisture in your home.

Keep in mind that you cannot remove all mold from your home. There are literally hundreds of thousands of different molds that live among us and it is impossible not to have some of those molds inside of our home.

Don’t try to salvage everything when it comes to toxic fungus growth. It’s almost impossible to save wallpaper, drywall, paperwork and other delicate items. If it’s replaceable and non-salvageable, seal it in a plastic bag and throw it away.

And finally, don’t ignore the problem. It’s not going to go away and when black mold and mildew gets out of hand, there’s not stopping it. At the very least, you could have to spend hundreds of dollars repair your home and at worst, you could end up losing your home or your life. Mold is nothing to play around with. Always be prepared because your health could very well depend on it.

When it comes to the words mold and mildew remover, many people are often confused. And it’s no wonder with so many mold removal products on today’s market. Everywhere you look there are a variety of mold cleaners. There are bathroom cleaners, kitchen cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, products for toxic molds and even eco-friendly fungal removers. The choices are virtually unlimited. And with all of the confusion lies the uncontrollable urge to just grab any cleaner and go. Unfortunately doing so can be a bad choice.

Despite what a manufacturer tries to convince you of, there is a difference between mold and mildew. Mildew is generally harmless, but can cause allergies in people while some molds like black mold are very toxic.

And while a simple black mold removal spray may work on mildews and some molds, it won’t work on the toxic stuff. And speaking of toxic, if you’re concerned about your health and the ozone layer, you’ll definitely want to go with an eco-friendly product. However, whether you decide to use an eco-friendly product or not is your own call since many people have a disagreement on whether or not the product’s ability to permanently remove mold and mildew is valid.

Of course if you’re on a budget you may have heard that bleach works just as well as all of the rest. It does if it’s used on surfaces that are non-porous. Otherwise you’ll be wiping away the fungus again in a matter of a few days. Plus, you’re better off not using bleach since the chemical can cause lung damage and respiratory problems, not to mention it’s bad for the environment.

If you are going to be using a mold spray meant to remove toxic fungus, you need to arm yourself with a respiratory (surgical) mask and a pair of rubber gloves. These items will insure the safety of your health from the toxic spores. You may also want to purchase a sheet of plastic and some tape to seal of the area affected by the moldy spores, which will prevent them from migrating to other areas of your home.

Once the mold cleaner has been applied to the surface area, you should allow it to set for the exact time indicated on the bottle. Otherwise you can risk damaging the surface if you leave it on for too long or the fungus might not be removed if it’s not left on for long enough.

And of course as with any product, you’ll want to read the manufacturers notes since directions may vary. Also, you need to keep in mind that not every product will be safe on all surfaces. Even eco-friendly products can cause damage to some materials like leather. So be sure to read the warning labels and always test the mold and mildew remover in an inconspicuous area if you’re not sure of the reaction to it.

You certainly don’t want that $5000 leather couch to have a nice big ugly spot right in plain sight for all of your friends and family to see, now do you?

Mold mildew removal is nothing new to many housewives who have to tackle the fungus at least once a year. And chances are you’ve probably already had several areas in your home become affected by mold and mildew. However, all is not lost in the battle against the fungus and with a little knowledge and some cleaning, you’ll be well on your way to a healthy home in no time.

If you’re smelling the mold problem, but not seeing it, the best solution most people would assume is to follow your nose. However, some mold may be invisible so it’s also a good idea to look in the most common spots for clues. Look for leaky faucets, pipes and sweat on walls or floors.

Also, don’t forget the most obvious places such as in the refrigerator or on cabinets where food is forgotten. Basements, bathrooms and kitchens are all likely places where mold can accumulate, but don’t forget attics, roofs and outside buildings like sheds and garages.

In general, most people believe that bleach is a great solution for mold and mildew. Bleaching is okay if the surface isn’t non-porous, meaning nothing can get below the surface. However, bleach is a chemical one which many people can’t stand to be around. It burns the lungs and isn’t good for the environment.

A better alternative for non-porous surfaces is vinegar. Of course if you’re not fond of the smell you may not want to go this route, but if you can get beyond the pungent aroma, it’s an excellent alternative for cleaning mold.

If the surface you’ll be working with is porous, you’ll need to choose a mold and mildew removal product that is made specifically to absorb deep down into the surface. There are many products made for the task, but the best are the organic ones since they are better for the environment and our health.

Even when using an organic black mold removal product, you should open windows or find some way to create ventilation in the area where you will be working. A dehumidifier is one good way to ventilate the room. You could also use a fan as long as it isn’t blowing on the area you’ll be working in.

Some good items to have on hand along with the product of your choice are a scrubbing brush, a soft rag, and rubber gloves. If you know that you’ll be working around black mold, you will also want to wear a paper surgical mask to protect yourself from the toxic spores of the fungus.

If you’ll be working around a delicate area that is inhabited by mold or mildew such as clothing, require a little more care than your standard wall or floor. If the article of clothing can be bleached, you can wash it alone with a solution of bleach and cold water. It’s best not to use hot since heat can sometimes cause stains to set in place.

If you’re not able to bleach the article of clothing, you may want to look for a product that can kill mold, yet is safe for fabrics. In some cases it may not be possible to remove the mold or mildew from some fabrics just as some materials such as drywall may not be salvageable even with the use of a mold mildew removal product.

Mold and mildew are not the same no matter what a product’s bottle reads. Mold can be harmless or dangerous depending on the type, while mildew is generally harmless, yet can cause severe allergies in some people. And any way you look at it, mold and mildew removal is a must. I mean come on. Who wants a nasty fuzzy mess all over the shower or along the windowsill? And that smell?

So for the sake of your sanity and everyone’s ewww gross reactions as they make a hasty exit from your bathroom and home, let’s get it cleaned up, shall we?

The first thing you really need to know is when you are dealing with either fungus, you need to wear at the very least a respiratory mask and rubber gloves. Mold can cause severe headaches, coughing, respiratory infections, dizziness, memory loss, hearing loss and joint pain. Mildew can cause allergic reactions including coughing, sneezing, sinus congestion, watery eyes, red eyes, runny nose, skin rash, fatigues and headaches.

Next, make sure you know where the source of the problem is located. You may find that it’s as simple as shower mold, which you can easily remove yourself, or something more serious like a flooded basement mold which may require the help of a professional.

If you’re planning on doing the work yourself, you can purchase a simple over-the-counter black mold removal product that is for surface cleaning only or a product that will penetrate deep down below the surface.

Whatever product you choose, make sure it’s specifically meant for the type of fungus you are removing, otherwise it will just be a waste of money and your time. You may also want to consider using a mold and mildew remover that is eco-friendly.

If you’d prefer an all-natural mold removal solution, you can try using a mixture of white vinegar and water. This solution may be a better alternative for items of delicate nature that are porous, meaning can absorb liquids easily. To use, just spray on the item and wipe away with a clean rag.

Another all-natural solution for mildew is a paste of salt and lemon juice and rubbed into the fungus. This solution can also be used on clothing, but take care not to leave in the sun since lemon is a natural lightener.

If you don’t mind the expense, many people swear by tea tree oil and water to use on mildewing stains. Just add a few drops of the oil to 1 quart of water and spray the solution onto the affected area, then wipe away with a dry rag.

To prevent problems from arising in the future one of the best and usually cheapest solutions is a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers can help reduce fungi growth from accumulating by removing much of the humidity from the environment.

If you can’t afford a dehumidifier you can also try opening windows when you shower and turning on exhaust fans. Keeping wet towels and other moist items out of a non-ventilated bathroom may also help keep you from having to make another mold and mildew removal date with your home any time soon.

If you’ve ever read the back of a bottle of tub and shower cleaner, you made have noticed the words mold and mildew. I’ll be honest, for years I always assumed those two words meant the same thing. While they are similar, there is a difference.

Mold is a type of fungus that produces growth on various types of moist or decaying surfaces. It can grow on leather, clothing, walls, ceilings, and food or almost anywhere that moisture is present. It can often be identified by its color, which can range in blues, greens, blacks and reds. While some mold is harmless, some can be toxic and cause health problems in both humans and animals.

Mildew is also a type of fungus that grows on moist surfaces. However, mildew is generally found in showers, bathtubs and windowsills. It can be identified by its color of gray or white. Mildew is also more distinct since it can only take on a powdery or fuzzy form. Although mildewing surfaces are not toxic, they can cause problems for people who are allergic to mold.

The best way for black mold removal and to minimize these types of fungus is by keeping the areas dry where moisture accumulates. If you already have a fungi problem, there are many products available on the market specifically designed to tackle the problem. If you’re worried about chemicals, there are also eco-friendly products available.

To prevent mold and mildew outbreaks, you should invest in a dehumidifier and open windows when possible. You may also want to consider installing an exhaust fan in both the kitchen and in the bathroom. And remember to always protect yourself by wearing rubber gloves and a mask when cleaning mold and mildew.
