Did you know that there is a difference between toxic black mold and mildew? While both are a type of fungus (mold), mildew is not generally toxic, but it can cause allergy problems in some people. Toxic mold however, can be quite serious and when left undisturbed it can cause a wide arrange of health problems.

Yet despite their differences, both types of mold and mildew should never be left undisturbed for obvious health reasons and I honestly don’t know anyone who loves looking at a nasty fungus problem. However, before you run out and buy a mold and mildew remover, you should keep in mind that:

Black Mold is a toxin that requires special attention. A simple cleaner will not kill this type of fungus. You need to purchase a product that is designed for toxic mold.

While mildew is generally not dangerous, it’s a good idea that you wear protection when cleaning any fungus. You’ll need a pair of rubber gloves, goggles and a paper (surgical) mask for the job.

Both types of fungus rely on moisture. To minimize growth, repair and seal any leaks before you try to clean up the mold. Otherwise the mold will be back within a few weeks.

Keep things dry to prevent future fungal growth. Wipe down walls after bathing or showering, run exhaust vans and open windows when possible.

Don’t try to do it yourself when toxic molds are more than 10 square feet. Instead, hire a professional black mold removal company to get the job done safely. If you’re worried about your budget, talk to your insurance company to see if the costs are covered. If not, find out if your city or county offers help for homes that have been invaded by mold.

If you can, invest in an exhaust fan for the laundry room, bathroom and kitchen. If you can’t afford to do so, consider investing in a few dehumidifiers to help reduce the moisture in your home.

Keep in mind that you cannot remove all mold from your home. There are literally hundreds of thousands of different molds that live among us and it is impossible not to have some of those molds inside of our home.

Don’t try to salvage everything when it comes to toxic fungus growth. It’s almost impossible to save wallpaper, drywall, paperwork and other delicate items. If it’s replaceable and non-salvageable, seal it in a plastic bag and throw it away.

And finally, don’t ignore the problem. It’s not going to go away and when black mold and mildew gets out of hand, there’s not stopping it. At the very least, you could have to spend hundreds of dollars repair your home and at worst, you could end up losing your home or your life. Mold is nothing to play around with. Always be prepared because your health could very well depend on it.

If you’ve ever experienced any type of flooding, then you know that along with it usually comes the need for some water damage mold removal. And if the mold is minimal, you can deal with the mess on your own. Ready, set, go!

First of all, you’ll need to eliminate the source of the problem. This means fixing any leaky pipes, walls, ceilings or whatever the problem may be. You’ll also want to make sure that the area is free from moisture.

Once you’ve repaired and dried out the affected area, you’ll want to seal it off with a tape and plastic to prevent the spores of the fungus from spreading to other areas of the home. You’ll also want to open as many windows as possible in the room or run an exhaust fan for ventilation.

Next, arm yourself with protective gear. This should include goggles, a respiratory mask and a pair of rubber gloves. Without these items you could be prone to health problems caused by the spores of the fungus.

Then, skip the bleach and purchase a mold and mildew remover instead. Recent studies have shown that using bleach on mold will not permanently kill it because it cannot penetrate below the surface where spores tend to hide. Not to mention the fact that bleach gives off a dangerous fume.

You’ll need to seal any non-salvageable items that have been damaged by the mold in a plastic bag and discard them. Such items may include drywall, wallpaper, furniture, or anything that is a porous material.

Now, spray the mold and mildew removal product onto the affected surface and scrub the area using a stiff brush. Then, spray the area again and allow the product to set for the time indicated on the bottle. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Then wipe away any remaining residue with a clean and dry rag.

Once the area has been cleaned and all traces of the fungus are gone, you’ll want to dry the area using a dehumidifier or several fans. If neither of these options is available, then you’ll want to at least open windows in the room if the weather is permitting. You can also use an exhaust fan if you have one in the room.

If you find that the mold growth has affected a much larger area than you’d anticipated (over 10 square feet), you should immediately call a professional. It’s not wise to try and remove the mold yourself even if you think you know what you’re doing.

While some water damage mold removal is simple enough to do on your own, not everyone is experienced enough to clean up a major mold infestation.

Plus, a certified professional will have the proper equipment to help remove the mold safely from your home. Your health depends on it and in some cities it’s even a law that severe fungus growth be left to the hands of a professional. Be wise, be safe. Yours or your family’s health should never be at risk.

Almost everyone that has experienced some sort of flooding knows that most carpets that have been contaminated with mold are not worth salvaging. But, there are some instances where you can remove carpet mold as long as it’s not severe.

How to Remove Carpet Mold

• If it’s wall-to-wall carpeting you’ll need to lift it up from the tack strip in the area where the moisture problem has occurred and mold growth now remains. Begin at the corner of the carpeting where it’s closest to the water damage mold and fold it back onto itself.

• Next, remove the padding that is underneath the carpeting, and check the floor beneath it. If there is any moisture under the floor, you’ll need to allow it to dry before laying more padding on the floor. To speed up the process you can use a fan or dehumidifier for drying. You’ll also want to wash the floor down with a mold and mildew remover using a scrub brush and allow the floor to dry.

• Next you’ll want to use that same product (unless the manufacturer suggests otherwise) on the carpeting and on the underside of it as well. Let it set according to the manufacturer’s directions and then use a scrub brush to really get down into the core of the fibers. Continue the process until no more mold is visible.

• Now you’ll want to use that same product, again letting it set for the time allowed by the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, using a rag wipe away any remaining moldy residue. Make sure every time you use the rag you are using a clean area of the rag (or a new rag) for each wipe. Otherwise, you’re just going to contaminate the area again.

• Your next step is to dry out the carpeting. If it’s possible try to find a wet vacuum to get it done faster. If you don’t have a way of getting a wet vacuum you should place several fans near the carpet to speed the drying time.

• Next you will need to apply a new layer of padding, and new tack strip if there were any signs of fungus present. You can then lay the carpeting back down and vacuum (preferably with a HEPA vacuum) to clean up any remaining dirt and dust that could be trapped in the fibers.

• And finally, you’ll need to keep an eye on the area of carpeting where the moldy growth was to assure that a future problem does not occur.

On a final note, if the above method to remove carpet mold isn’t effective, you will have to throw it out. This might seem like an expensive waste, but in the long run, it will actually save you money. It’s better to get rid of the carpet than be faced with a lot of hospital bills, contracting bills, remodeling bills or even needing to buy a new home. And why take the risk of an unhealthy environment in the first place? So if necessary, ditch the carpeting and believe me you’ll feel a whole lot better in the end.

If you’re seeing little black spots on your walls, you may very well have a mold problem. If that’s the case you’ll want to take the steps necessary to eliminate the mold and make your home safe once again.

Here’s a quick guide for drywall mold removal -

First, you need to make sure that’s really a mold infestation on your walls. Generally you can smell when mold is present in a home. A musty smell most likely means there are molds growing somewhere. But you can also locate mold by looking for water damage. Water damage mold can be found in basements, attics, near windows and doors and behind appliances that use water such as refrigerators, deep freezers, dishwashers, washers and water heaters.

Next, you’ll want to assess whether the damage is enough (10 square feet or more) that you’ll need to hire a professional mold removal company or small enough that you can just do it yourself.

If the job is small enough to clean up on your own, you’ll need to wear protective gear, including rubber gloves, goggles and a respiratory mask. These items are necessary for your health since mold travels quickly and easily at the slightest touch.

• Next you will need to cut out the areas of the wall where the fungus is present since mold cannot be cleaned from this type of wall. Make sure you are very careful around any electrical wiring when you’re removing the moldy wall.

• Once you’ve cut out and disposed of the contaminated areas, you should sand any wood studs that were attached to the moldy wall to completely remove all traces of the fungus. Most homeowners have simply scrubbed the affected areas of the wood with a bleach solution, but it’s just not enough.

• After sanding the areas, you’ll then want to clean the surrounding surfaces using a black mold removal product and allowing it to penetrate the area for at least 15 minutes. You can find products for removing mold at most hardware and farming stores as well as discount stores. Again, when cleaning around electrical wiring please use caution. And please do not use bleach as a cleaning agent for the mold. Recent studies have shown that bleach is actually ineffective at penetrating below surfaces where fungus spores tend to hide.

• Once the surfaces have thoroughly dried and the molds have been removed, you can begin repairing the wall. Keep in mind that you may want to consider using fans or some form of ventilation to speed up the drying process when repairing the wall. Even a dehumidifier is helpful if you have one.

And finally, if you begin the task of the drywall mold removal and find that there’s more damage than you’d anticipated, you should hire a professional to access the damages, clean up the infected areas and make any repairs necessary to remove the fungus growth. It’s better to be safe than to risk your health or your family’s health.

Most people who’ve experienced pink mold believe it’s a fungus. However, it’s actually an airborne bacterium known as Serratia Marcescens. And because this type of bacteria contains mold it also prefers damp conditions and can be found in bathrooms (think tile grout).

So in order to remove this nasty substance, you can clean it just as you would when you’re dealing with bathroom mold. There are many different types of commercial products available on the market, but if you’re on a budget, you can try a few of these ideas.

Many people believe that bleach is the solution to every household-cleaning problem there is. While there are a lot of debates as to whether it can clean everything, it’s still number one on the list despite its dangerous vapors. If you still favor bleach you can try getting rid of mold by mixing one cup of regular household bleach with one gallon of water to use as a solution.

You should at least open all of the windows in or near your bathroom to at least minimize some of the irritation that this chemical can cause. Also be sure to wear a pair of rubber gloves to prevent skin irritations and other problems. Also you should invest in some scrubbing brushes and an old toothbrush that you can easily throw away.

You can then apply the bleach solution using a scrub brush to get down in those hard to reach areas. Once you’ve applied the bleach, let it set for at least 10 minutes and then rinse with clean water. If you find there is still some of the pinkish bacteria on your shower walls you may need to repeat the steps. After the final rinse, you’ll then want to dry the area with a clean rag.

If you prefer something that doesn’t involve the use of dangerous fumes, a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water can work just as well. You can use the same method as the bleach solution when applying it to the affected area.

Another solution that many people swear by is a boric acid solution. Spray the solution to the affected areas and let sit for at least 5 minutes. Next, scrub the area with a brush to really clean the hard to reach areas. Next, spray the solution again and let it sit for another 5 minutes. Then, rinse the area with clean water and dry with a rag.

To prevent future pink mold in your bathroom or other areas of the home, remember all molds enjoy warm and wet places. Investing in a bathroom fan and opening the windows every time you bathe or shower can reduce mold growth. Also, drying off shower walls and the bathtub can help. Or for showers, you can even invest in a simple squeegee to wipe down walls and shower doors after every use.

Attics are notorious for moisture-ridden problems if they’re not insulated properly. In the summertime it’s a concern, but not nearly as bad as the wintertime. That’s because in the winter months we tend to run our heaters and hot air rises into our attics, which generally stays cold. When the hot air combines with the cold boards of the roof it creates moisture where attic mold can thrive.

And unfortunately your heater isn’t the only thing that can cause moisture-ridden mold. Bathroom fans that blow directly into our attics as well as showering can cause mold problems in our attics. Also beware of the nails used in shingles, which can cause even more problems with mold on the roof. And without the proper amounts of air ventilation those molds will just keep coming back.

So before you tackle that fungal mess, you need to go straight to the source of the problem and fix it. Once you’ve removed the moisture from up there you can then begin the clean up process.

Next you’ll need to identify the mold. Most molds found in attics are white, brown, green or black in color. The mold can be found on wood, drywall and even insulation. Look for areas where discoloration or stains have occurred. You may see small splotches or spots or you may find a powdery coating on the surface area.

Then, you need to eliminate the problem by removing any damaged areas that are covered in the fungus. This may include insulation any items you may have stored in the area. Once you’ve removed as much of the source as you can, you should invest in a good mold spray that will permanently remove the mold. Bleaching will not work because in most cases it cannot penetrate below surfaces where mold tends to hide.

If you’re unable to investigate the possibly affected area yourself, you can hire a mold remediation company. And if possible, look for one that has a ventilation expert in their company. Just remember, a roofing contractor is not the same as a remediation company.

If you’re pretty sure hiring someone is a waste of your time and you don’t have any mold in your home, maybe you should take a closer look at yourself and your family. Are you experiencing any unexplained illnesses such as a common cold or the flu that just doesn’t want to go away?

What about memory loss or a respiratory infection that you’ve written off as old age? Are you experiencing headaches that appear on a daily or weekly basis? Maybe you have cramps, aches or joint pains that you’ve just chalked it up as old age as well?

If so, you may very well be dealing with toxic mold which can cause not only severe health problems, but also bleeding of the lungs in people with weak immune systems and babies.

Of course most molds are harmless, but toxic black mold is a far more serious matter that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Please don’t ignore the problem. Even if you never use your attic, it doesn’t mean attic mold isn’t present and can’t harm you from way up there. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to removing mold from your home.

Aspergillus mold is a group containing over 150 different types of mold that can be found in Mother Nature. The species of molds were first discovered in the 1700’s by a biologist named Pier Antonio Micheli.

One of the most common places these molds can be found is on bread and potatoes that have gone bad. But, the mold also grows on plants and trees. However, many of the species can be found more indoors than outdoors.

The moldscan cause Aspergillosis, which is a name for a group of diseases that can attack the immune systems of both humans and animals. It is considered to be the second most common fungus disease known to man. There are more than fifteen of this group that can cause disease in humans and animals with two being the most common, which are Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus.

These types of fungus are especially dangerous to those whose immune systems are weaker such as newborns and the elderly. Many of the symptoms include chest pains, difficulty in breathing, coughing and fever. However, there are serious health related issues from the mold dangers, which can occur such as asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Of course not all of the species of molds are dangerous to humans and animals. As a matter of fact, some of the molds are used in certain beverages and as a source for citric acid.

Even so, there’s still that little no factor that a majority of the fungal species can cause health problems. And while there’s no way to completely get rid of every single mold that we come into contact with, we can at least remove a majority of it from our home.

Since most fungus relies on moisture to thrive, it’s necessary to minimize any sources of condensation throughout the home. If you have a leaky pipe or showerhead, you should get it fixed immediately. If your basement stays wet from the weather, you need to seal up any leaks or cracks along the walls.

If you live in a climate where it’s almost impossible to keep your house moisture-free, you may need to rely on dehumidifiers and fans to help reduce fungus growth.

Once you’ve blocked off the source of the problem, you can then remove the mold from your home. You can either choose to buy a commercial product or you can use a safer alternative using black mold removal home remedies.

And while most people prefer greener alternatives to chemicals, you should keep in mind that not every home remedy will work on all molds. So you must be willing to try different resources continuously.

You should also keep in mind however that not all commercial mold removers are full of dangerous chemicals. There are many on the market that is green and just as safe as a home remedy. Ultimately, the decision on what product to use is more of a preference.

Just remember that no matter what product you decide to use, do your research first. You’ll end up wasting not only your time, but also your money if you invest in a product that won’t destroy Aspergillus mold. Research is a must.

While a mold on roof problem may not be deadly, those black or green stains can cause wear and tear on your shingles – not to mention, make your home look bad.

It may seem like replacing all the roofing with new shingles would be the easiest solution, but in reality it’s not the most practical. If however you do find that the shingles are worn out, you should consider replacing them with copper granules laced ones since it will help prevent future mold growth.

A less expensive solution however, would be to spray wash the shingles with a mold spray. Do not use a pressure washer since it can remove surface granules from the shingles and damage them.

And if you have any plants that are below on the ground, you’ll want to water them or cover them if you can with plastic since some cleaners can harm them. Afterwards you’ll want to rinse the plants even if they were covered in plastic just to be safe.

When spraying the shingles, you should allow the solution to sit for at least 15 minutes, and then rinse the areas with a hose. To check if there is any remaining mold, test the surface to see if it feels slimy. If it does then there is still mold present and you will need to allow the area to dry, then spray the shingles with the mold cleaner again.

As a word of caution, you may be tempted to use a solution of water and bleach to kill the mold. While in some cases using bleach may work, it’s has been recently shown in studies that it cannot kill deep down below the surface where mold tends to hide. Bleaching can also damage the shingles if it is allowed to set in for even a short amount of time.

Because many of us are not fond of climbing roofs (or simply can’t) even if it means spending a little more money, there is always the option of hiring a professional to do the job for you. However, you should know that the cost of mold remediation will not come cheap and some companies may charge as much as $800 for their services.

Just be sure to shop around first before you go with the first company you see. Not every company will charge the same fees for their services so shopping around and comparing prices can actually save you money.
But before you hire a black mold removal professional you may want to make sure that it’s really fungus growing on your shingles and not dirt. You can do this by placing a few drops of a mold remover on an affected area. If the area becomes clean chances are you have a mold problem. If the area remains the same, it’s probably just dirt.

With or without a professional, you’ll want to prevent future mold on roof problems after the job is done by keeping tree branches away and any other debris that may be preventing the shingles from staying dry and help prevent another mold attack on your roof.

Last night as I was taking down old wallpaper from my kitchen walls when I noticed water damage. And then I thought, “uhh ohhh”, because where there’s water damage there’s bound to be mold on the ceiling!

So now I’m wondering, will I have to hire a contractor to get rid of the stuff or can I do it myself? Is the damage minor or is there attic mold as well? There was only one way to find out, so I went upstairs and investigated. As it turns out, the damage is minor as far as fungus is concerned. However, I will need to replace the drywall, which should be an interesting job.

Still, if the damage had been anything but minor, I would have needed to hire a black mold removal company and it wouldn’t have been cheap. You see, I live in a fairly small town and the nearest contractor is nearly 2 hours away! When hiring a contractor most people don’t take into account for travel expenses and as I learned they are necessary in some cases.

Some mold removal companies may include a specific mileage fee depending on the total distance, but most will charge a fee based on per a mile. And if they need to come out several times, those fees will add up. So to save yourself a lot of stress, you should ask the contractor about mileage fees and be sure to get it in writing if you do decide to hire them. Unfortunately even if you don’t decide to hire them, you may end up having to pay mileage fees for their initial visit.

If you have homeowner’s insurance, you may or may not be able to recover the costs. If you do have to hire a company from out of town, you may want to ask to see if they will give you a discount on services if you do decide to hire them. Another option may be to do as much of the work as you can yourself before you hire the contractor.

However, before you try to do the work yourself, it’s wise to check with your city about codes and laws. Some cities may not allow anyone other than a licensed professional to remove toxic mold from a home or business.

If you do find that you don’t need a contractor to remove the problem, then hooray! For minor problems, you may be able to apply a mold removal product to the affected area and simply wipe away. Just be sure to read the bottle directions and make sure it is one made specifically for black mold removal. Otherwise, the problem will just come right back.

If the mold on ceiling area is more than 10 square feet, please don’t attempt the project alone. Black mold is very dangerous and can cause severe lung damage and even death if it is not handled properly. Leave it up to the professionals and keep yourself and your family safe from harm!

If you’ve ever read the back of a bottle of tub and shower cleaner, you made have noticed the words mold and mildew. I’ll be honest, for years I always assumed those two words meant the same thing. While they are similar, there is a difference.

Mold is a type of fungus that produces growth on various types of moist or decaying surfaces. It can grow on leather, clothing, walls, ceilings, and food or almost anywhere that moisture is present. It can often be identified by its color, which can range in blues, greens, blacks and reds. While some mold is harmless, some can be toxic and cause health problems in both humans and animals.

Mildew is also a type of fungus that grows on moist surfaces. However, mildew is generally found in showers, bathtubs and windowsills. It can be identified by its color of gray or white. Mildew is also more distinct since it can only take on a powdery or fuzzy form. Although mildewing surfaces are not toxic, they can cause problems for people who are allergic to mold.

The best way for black mold removal and to minimize these types of fungus is by keeping the areas dry where moisture accumulates. If you already have a fungi problem, there are many products available on the market specifically designed to tackle the problem. If you’re worried about chemicals, there are also eco-friendly products available.

To prevent mold and mildew outbreaks, you should invest in a dehumidifier and open windows when possible. You may also want to consider installing an exhaust fan in both the kitchen and in the bathroom. And remember to always protect yourself by wearing rubber gloves and a mask when cleaning mold and mildew.
