I had a leak under my tub and I have this really awful smell in my bathroom and master bedroom, I looked under the tub and notice that there is blackish grey looking spots, I cant tell the diffrence if it is black mold, regular mold or just mildew. I have 2 small children and need to know what I can do to get rid of this substance before it harms my family?

Informative article. I recommend using at least the bare minimum of protective mold removal gear, no matter what. This means basic plastic gloves, goggles, and some sort of face mask - even a disposable one is better than nothing. Unless you're a mold expert, it's often hard to distinguish between mold types, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Although cleaning with soap (high pH and not great for leather) and using a soft bristle brush to get down to where the mold spores "hide" (almost impossible without damaging side effects) the method you suggest will not rid the leather of the unsightly black mold and, importantly, cannot ultimately inhibit mold spores from re-blooming.

The leather may also dry with a faded appearance after all the rubbing. Yes, the leather will be cleaner to some extent, but the overall appearance and condition of the corium (interior) of the leather will not be enhanced using the suggested method.

Black mold especially creates spots that usually create a permanent discoloration in leather. There are many types of mold (fungi) that are much easier to deal with on affected leather items and, after the proper care will look mold-free and healthy.

My suggestion? Try Leather Therapy WASH to clean the leather & mold spots-- then a simple, light application of Leather Therapy Restorer/Conditioner will condition the leather WHILE INHIBITING MOLD GROWTH. FYI, these products are also used in many museums, automotive & furniture restoration situations as well.

Well-known to horsemen who have lots of leather that is very prone to mold problems, Leather Therapy Restorer/Conditioner won the prestigious Product of the Year in 1997 in the equestrian industry. Check out LeatherTherapy.com for more information.

I am very concerned about removing the mold spores forever or as close to forever as I can. And I would like to know what I can use. Bleach and or tilex for mold and is there a paint that I can use after the other work has been done. Where can I purchase this paint as well ? Thanks.

Good information about black mold.
If you see that your home has symptoms of black mold you have to be very careful when removing the toxin.

If the infected area is greater than a square foot, it is best to call a professional!

I don't know anything about the cleaning aspect, but the first paragraph isn't right where it says that this pink bacteria contains mold. Mold is a type of fungus, which is a completely different type of organism than bacteria, and they rarely if ever live together. I'm pretty sure this is just bacteria.
